The custom of bringing evergreens home during the winter began in the 16th century among northern and eastern Europeans. Wreaths are more than just decorations. The circular shape of the wreath, without a beginning or end point, also symbolized eternal life. The colors red, green, white or purple were often used in wreaths to represent the blood, life, joy, sacrifice or forgiveness in Jesus. Traditionally, evergreens have been used to make Christmas wreaths.
